Obamacare’s Tax on the Most Vulnerable is on the Chopping Block

According to reports, the Senate Finance Committee is planning on adding the repeal of the Affordable Care Act individual mandate to their tax bill – a particularly pernicious provision in a piece of legislation that is the text-book definition opposite of affordable.

A closer look at the numbers reveals that repealing the individual mandate – a requirement that every American buy health insurance or pay a fine – would disproportionately free low-income Americans from having to pay this onerous tax. That’s because according to Internal Revenue Service (IRS) data from 2015, out of those households paying a penalty for not buying health coverage, nearly four out of every five (79%) earned less than $50,000.
