Freedom Partners Applauds Attorney General Sessions for Curbing DOJ Political Shakedowns

Post by Freedom Partners

Arlington, VA — In a new memo today, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions reversed an Obama-era practice of forcing businesses to line the pockets of allied third-party organizations as a condition of legal settlement terms with the federal government.

The Obama administration used these settlements to quietly steer money to left-leaning organizations that worked to advance liberal policy objectives at the federal, state, and local levels.

Sessions said his new directive is aimed at “ending this practice and ensuring that settlement funds are only used to compensate victims, redress harm and punish and deter unlawful conduct.”

Freedom Partners Vice President of Policy Nathan Nascimento issued the following statement:

“The way the Obama administration abused its power to enrich political allies with these settlements amounted to nothing less than a government shakedown of private businesses. We applaud Attorney General Sessions for taking this important step to root out cronyism, protect taxpayers, and ensure that settlement funds are used for their intended purpose – consumer relief.”
