Freedom Partners Thanks President Trump for Signing First Step Act into Law
Post by Geoff Holtzman
Arlington, VA – Today, President Donald Trump signed the historic First Step Act into law. The bipartisan legislation, which passed the Senate 87-12 and the House 358-36, marks the first major reform in years aimed at making our federal criminal justice policies smarter, more redemptive, and more just.
Freedom Partners Chairman Mark Holden issued the following statement:
“Policymakers and advocates on all sides poured years worth of blood, sweat, and tears into making the First Step Act happen, but arguably no one was more vital to the effort than President Trump. Without his vision, determination, compassion, and support, we would not have been able to take this critical first step toward improving our criminal justice system.
“We’d also be remiss if we didn’t recognize the incredible work done by Jared Kushner, who never relented in his quest to see this legislation through. Jared has our utmost respect and deserves much credit for uniting and leading a diverse coalition of policymakers and groups who all worked tirelessly to make the First Step Act a reality.
“The First Step Act represents a rare bipartisan achievement that will make us safer and help those who have paid their debt to society earn a second chance to transform their lives. We celebrate this landmark accomplishment and look forward to joining forces again soon with anyone who shares our vision of breaking down barriers and helping all people improve their lives.”
