Freedom Partners: Washington Must Lower Trade Barriers, Not Create New Ones with the Reciprocal Trade Act

Post by Freedom Partners

Arlington, VA – During tonight’s State of the Union Address, President Trump urged Congress to pass the “Reciprocal Trade Act” (H.R. 764). The legislation would grant the executive branch even greater power to unilaterally impose tariffs.

Freedom Partners Executive Vice President Nathan Nascimento issued the following statement:

“There is no way around it: The Reciprocal Trade Act is a step backwards. Tariffs are taxes on American consumers and producers and warrant congressional approval and oversight. To pave the way to a more prosperous future, the president and Congress must work together to eliminate all trade barriers at home and abroad.”

Last week, Freedom Partners joined an open letter to Congress urging them to reject H.R. 764. The group noted the measure would undermine the checks and balances essential to responsible governance.
