Holden: Chairman Grassley Absolutely Right to Bypass the Blue Slip Process and Start Filling Important Judicial Vacancies

Post by Freedom Partners

Arlington, VA — According to POLITICO, Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley has confirmed  that after months of highly qualified judicial nominees being stonewalled by Democrats, he will bypass the Senate’s arcane “blue slip” process and move ahead with confirmation hearings.

The “blue slip” process is a century-old tradition in the Senate that dictates that the Judiciary Committee will not hold a hearing on a nominee without receiving permission from the nominee’s home-state senators, which comes in the form of a blue slip. Senators Al Franken (D-MN), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) have all said they would not be returning blue slips for President Trump’s circuit court nominees.

Freedom Partners Chairman Mark Holden issued the following statement:

“Chairman Grassley is absolutely right to bypass this outdated policy being abused by numerous Democrat Senators who would rather play political games than do their job. The blue slip process was never intended to be a veto over highly qualified judicial nominees, and the obstruction by some senators is more than enough evidence that it has outlived its usefulness. We applaud Chairman Grassley for rightfully retiring this process and ensuring partisan politics don’t continue to interfere with filling the more than 130 current federal court vacancies. Americans deserve a fully functioning judiciary.”
