Wisconsin Working Families Pay Millions of Dollars for the Privilege of Not Buying Obamacare – Tammy Baldwin Wants to Keep It That Way

Post by Freedom Partners

Arlington, VA – Senator Tammy Baldwin has been making life more difficult for the people of Wisconsin at every step of her public career – supporting a billion dollars in higher taxes for Dane County residents and trillions in higher taxes on everything from income to energy.

Now, instead of fighting for tax relief Wisconsin working families desperately need, Baldwin is fighting to keep the most unpopular provision of Obamacare – the individual mandate. Last year alone, 105,040 Wisconsinites chose to pay over $42 million in fines for simply opting not to purchase expensive, and in many cases unaffordable, health care plans.

Of those making less than $50,000 per year, 86,270 individuals paid a total of nearly $27 million in higher taxes in 2015 under the Obamacare individual mandate. In the words of former President Barack Obama, with an individual mandate, people already struggling to afford health insurance are “worse off … they then have no health care and are paying a fine above and beyond that.”

The tax reform plan currently working its way through Congress would repeal these taxes, which fall disproportionately on lower-income individuals.

Freedom Partners spokesman Bill Riggs issued the following statement:

“A bad deal for working Wisconsin families is punishing them with a tax for not purchasing a product they don’t want and can’t afford. Because of the individual mandate, more than 86,000 Wisconsinites making less than $50,000 who chose not to pay the outrageous costs of health care coverage were fined nearly $27 million. Tammy Baldwin is standing in the way of tax relief for everyone to protect these tax hikes on the most vulnerable. It can’t get much worse than that.”

Tammy Baldwin has a track record of making life harder for the people she’s supposed to look out for.

When she wasn’t trying to raise taxes, she was giving billion-dollar, taxpayer funded bailouts to some of the biggest and most powerful banks in the world and awarding trillions of dollars in corporate welfare to the wealthiest 1-percent of Americans.

Many hardworking Americans are finding it tougher to get a head, find a good job and earn a bigger paycheck – Tammy Baldwin would rather keep it that way them give them the relief they deserve.
